Kharkiv Oblast is located in two relief zones: forest and forest-steppe. It is situated in the northeast of Ukraine. The territory of Kharkiv region occupies approximately 5.21% of the territory of Ukraine. Agricultural land accounts for 2,381 thousand hectares. Practically 4/5 of this is fields. Among the soils, powerful Ukrainian chernozems and grey podzolized forest soils prevail. The chernozems that formed on forests vary from sandy light loams to heavy clay and clayey soils.

Large areas of gray podzolized soils adjoin drained ravines and ditches. On the forest terraces of rivers, salinized chernozems and sometimes solonchak are found. The thickness of the fertile layer reaches 110-120 cm. The depth of the humus horizon is 40-50 cm, with a concentration of useful substances up to 8%. The moderately continental climate allows for the cultivation of: hard wheat, particularly winter varieties, sugar beet, sunflower, and vegetable crops.
