The area of arable land
The area constitutes 4.1% of the territory of Ukraine. Agricultural lands span an area of 2459 thousand hectares, of which 1769 thousand hectares are arable land. The irrigated area is 51.4 thousand hectares. The soil cover primarily consists of chernozems. The southern part is rich in typical low-humus soils, while the southeast is covered with medium-humus chernozems. In the northern regions, gray and dark gray podzolized soils and podzolized chernozems are found.
The location on the southern slopes of the Dnipro Highlands has ensured a relief with a hilly uneven plain, dotted with numerous ravines and gullies. Due to the moderately warm climate transitioning to a moderately continental one and the quality of the soils, there is an opportunity to grow winter wheat and barley, sunflower, grain corn, soybeans, buckwheat, legumes, as well as sugar beets.
