Area of arable land
The area of the region is 4.76% of the territory of Ukraine. The territory of watersheds and steppes is dominated by chernozems, while under the forests – podzolic soils. One way or another, 92% of arable land (84% of agricultural land) in Poltava region is chernozem, mainly typical.
The quality of soils is directly influenced by the climate. This is strongly evident in watershed and forest plains. Chernozem soils with a humus concentration of more than 6% are located to the east of the Vorskla River valley. To the west of it, there are low-humus soils. The chernozems of the forest-steppe region, which lie to the east, gradually transition into ordinary steppes to the south. This land is fertile but requires additional irrigation.
On the right bank of the river valley, under broadleaf forests, podzolic soils have formed, which occupy 6.5% of the arable land. On the territory of podzol and dark gray soils, which have been cultivated for centuries, regregraded (restored) chernozems have formed. They are well-suited for growing winter wheat and rye. Approximately one third of the agricultural land area consists of saline soils. The majority of them are located in the southern part of the Poltava region, on the broad terraces of the Dnieper. These lands are optimally suited for growing fodder crops, peas, or corn.
