Area of cultivated land
The region occupies 3.46% of the area of Ukraine. The territory is represented by a plain, which is conditionally divided into left-bank and right-bank. Typical and heavily regressed chernozems dominate the soil cover, accounting for 53.7% of the land. Dark gray podzolized and regressed soils, as well as podzolized and weakly regressed chernozems, widespread on the left bank, make up 28.9%. Light gray and gray podzolized soils, located mainly on the elevations, constitute 7.3%. The concentration of humus in them ranges from 2.3% to 3.8%.
The soils of the Cherkasy region are considered the most fertile in Ukraine. Although they lag behind the southern chernozems in some agrochemical parameters, this is compensated by the climatic conditions: mild winters and warm summers with regular precipitation. The weather is particularly favorable during the growing season of agricultural crops. This allows for the cultivation of cereals (wheat, barley, including winter varieties), technical crops (rapeseed, sugar beets, sunflower, and soybeans), forage crops, and vegetables, both in protected (carrots, cabbage, table beets) and open ground (cucumbers and tomatoes). The region has a highly developed agro-industrial complex, the backbone of which consists of grain production. There are over 1800 agricultural enterprises in operation.
