Area of arable land

The area of the region constitutes 1.34% of the territory of Ukraine. Lowlands prevail, but there are also foothills. The soil cover changes with altitude: on the plains, gray forest and dark gray podzolized soils alternate with podzolized chernozems. In the river valleys, there are sod-stubble and meadow chernozems. The humus content in them reaches up to 5.5%. In the foothills, sod-podzolic surface-waterlogged soils dominate, while at the foot of the mountains, there are strongly waterlogged brown-podzolic soils. In the low mountains and in the hollows, sod brown soils appear, and in the valleys – sod and meadow soils.

The climate is moderately continental, mild and humid. This creates optimal conditions for the cultivation of barley, rye, wheat (spring and winter), oats, peas, rapeseed, and other agricultural crops.
