Area for cultivated land
The region is located on 2.28% of the territory of Ukraine. Agricultural land occupies 1,036 thousand hectares, of which about 82% (851 thousand hectares) are plowed fields. The territory is dominated by forest-steppe podzolized soils (72%). These include chernozems, gray forest, light and dark gray – these are the most fertile soils in the world. The lands located in the west of the right bank of the forest-steppe are quite humid. There are the most podzolized chernozems. They are found on the gentle slopes of hills, between the rivers Seret and Strypa. The concentration of humus in the soil is up to 4%, and the thickness of the fertile layer reaches 90 cm.
The climate in the Ternopil region is moderately continental, with warm humid summers and mild winters. The relief is dominated by plains and elevations with a slight tilt from north to south.
