Areas under arable land
The region occupies 5.5% of the territory of Ukraine. Agricultural land extends over 2,591.8 thousand hectares, of which 80.3% (2,077 thousand hectares) is leased. A total of 227 thousand hectares are irrigated. The main type of soil is southern chernozems with medium humus content. In coastal areas, saline and low-humus soils prevail, while in northern areas, podzolized chernozems are dominant.
The southern and central parts of the region are located in the steppe zone on the Black Sea lowlands, transitioning to the forest-steppe of the Podolsky Upland in the north. The warm moderately continental climate allows for the cultivation of cereal crops (wheat, barley, rye), legumes (rape, soybeans), open-field and greenhouse vegetables, and industrial crops (sunflower).
