The area of land under plowing
The region occupies 3.6% of the area of Ukraine. Agricultural land covers 1,264.3 thousand hectares, with arable land accounting for 798.5 thousand hectares. The soil cover is characterized by its location. Thus, black earth and gray podzolic soils are mainly found in the forest-steppe zones and watersheds, the plain forest-steppe zones are rich in sod-podzolic soils, while marshy and sod soils dominate in the bottoms of ravines and river valleys.
A large part of the territory is located in the Forest-Steppe zone on the Volyn-Podilsk Upland. To the north, there is a forest zone, while to the south are the Carpathians. Due to the moderately continental climate, it is possible to grow both grain crops (spring and winter rye, wheat, barley) – 48% of the sown area, as well as technical crops (sunflower, soybeans, rapeseed). There is also an increase in the area sown with vegetable and forage crops (potatoes, beets).
